Greece is a country in Southern Europe, located on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. It is a unitary parliamentary republic, with the capital city of Athens. The official language is Modern Greek.
The peninsula borders Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey to the north, and is bordered on the other sides by the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, and the Sea of Crete. It administers over 2,000 islands, 170 of which are inhabited.
Greece is considered the ideal successor to the Mycenaean civilization, Ancient Greece, and the Byzantine Empire, as well as one of the cradles of Western civilization and the birthplace of primordial democracy[6], philosophy, Orthodox Christianity, and Christian artistic, geometric, and theological principles, as well as the ancient Olympic Games, whose legacy has been embraced by the modern Olympic Games.
The Republic has its roots in the Greek War of Independence fought in the 19th century against the Ottoman Empire, which gave birth to the First Hellenic Republic. The London Convention of 1832 established the Kingdom of Greece, overthrown first in 1924 with the establishment of the Second Hellenic Republic, and again in 1967 with the coup d'état led by Colonels Georgios Papadopoulos, Nikolaos Makarezos, and Ioannis Ladas, which gave rise to the Dictatorship of the Colonels. The modern Republic was born in 1974 with the end of the military regime.
Despite a severe recession caused by the economic crisis of the 2010s, Greece is considered a developed country, ranked thirty-second in the world in the Human Development Index and with a per capita income of $20,317 (data updated to 2019). It is one of the 51 states that joined the United Nations in 1945 and since 1981 has been part of the European Economic Community and then the European Union. It is a member of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative; It adopted the euro along with most other countries in 2002; it has also been a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) since 1952,[8] of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) since 1961, and a founding member of the Organization of Black Sea Economic Co-operation (BSEC) and the European Space Agency (ESA).
Major cities include the capital, Athens, which hosted the modern Olympic Games in 1896 and again in 2004; Thessaloniki, sometimes also called Symprōteyousa (Greek: Συμπρωτεύουσα, literally: "co-capital")[10]; Patras, the main city of the Peloponnese; and Heraklion, the capital and largest city of the island of Crete.
