Ifni was a Spanish colony and later a province until June 30, 1969, when it was ceded to the Kingdom of Morocco.
Under the State Territorial Reform Plan, the province of Sidi Ifni (in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region since 2015) is made up of two urban municipalities and seventeen rural ones. It has an area of 1,502 km² and approximately 54,000 inhabitants. Its capital is Sidi Ifni.
It is a strip of land with approximately eighty kilometers of coastline and twenty-five kilometers inland, located on the Atlantic coast between the foothills of the Anti-Atlas and the ocean. It is located approximately 300 kilometers (170 nautical miles) from the island of Lanzarote.
The climate is arid, milder along the coastal strip, with irregular rainfall and consistently high temperatures. The population is mainly composed of the Baamarani Berber tribe, who practice Islam.
The fauna of the Sidi Ifni region in Morocco is diverse, including the Barbary macaque (one of the few primates living in the wild in North Africa) and desert-adapted animals like the giant herbivorous lizard Uromastyx nigriventris.
The area is also home to birds and other reptiles, and projects like those in the nearby Souss-Massa National Park are working to restore endangered species like gazelles and addax, as well as birds and the surrounding marine wildlife.
The region features fauna adapted to sub-desert and desert environments, demonstrating great biodiversity.
The area is rich in bird species, with more than 250 recorded species, many of which are part of conservation projects.
