Ivory Coast is a country located in West Africa. It borders Liberia and Guinea to the west, Mali to the northwest, Burkina Faso to the northeast, Ghana to the east, and has a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea to the south.
It has an area of 322,464 km². Its capital is Yamoussoukro, although most government institutions are located in Abidjan.
The first contacts with Europeans in the area that is now Ivory Coast date back to the beginning of the 17th century, by the Portuguese.
Subsequently, the English, French, and Dutch made their first contacts.[citation needed] Several dates are given for the establishment of a French protectorate in the territory of present-day Ivory Coast: in 1842, when the French concluded a treaty with some groups living on the coast, in 1843 and 
1844, when an admiral named Bouet-Williaumez signed treaties with the kings of Grand Bassam and Assinie, and in 1889, when two French delegations declared the southern region a French protectorate. The French declared Ivory Coast a colony in 1893. It gained its independence from France on August 7, 1960, with Félix Houphouët-Boigny becoming the first president of the independent republic.
Its economy is based primarily on agriculture, with coffee and cocoa as its main exports. Since independence, the Ivorian economy has experienced periods of significant expansion, along with periods of stagnation and crisis. In the last decade, the country has experienced substantial economic growth.
