Ghana, officially the Republic of Ghana, is a country in West Africa with its capital city of Accra. It borders Ivory Coast to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south.
A multicultural and multiethnic country, Ghana has 27 million inhabitants, distributed across various ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. 71.2% of the population is Christian, 17.6% Muslim, and 5% animist.[8]
The Gold Coast, inhabited for millennia (the first traces of human presence date back to the 11th century BC), became the target of European colonizers as early as the 15th century.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the territory came under British control, and on March 6, 1957, the country became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from the United Kingdom. Ghana is one of the West African countries where the slave trade to America was present, especially in the central region of the country, as evidenced by numerous monuments and fortresses such as Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, the most well-known and visited.
Ghana is a democratic republic led by a president who is both head of state and head of government. The country is a member of many international organizations, including the Commonwealth of Nations, the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, La Francophonie (associate member), and the United Nations. The country boasts one of the most stable and prosperous economies on the continent[9] and is the world's second-largest cocoa producer.
It is home to Lake Volta, the largest artificial lake in the world.
