Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a Central American country bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south.
Honduras is a unitary state and defines itself as free, sovereign, and independent. Tegucigalpa, along with Comayagüela, constitutes the Central District. The two cities together constitute the capital of Honduras, and it is the first and largest urban center in Honduras.
Its continental territory is bordered to the north and east by the Caribbean Sea, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the southwest by the Gulf of Fonseca, a tributary of the Pacific Ocean, to the south by El Salvador, and to the west by Guatemala.
Regarding maritime boundaries, it shares the following borders: Mexico, Belize, Cuba, the United Kingdom through the Cayman Islands, Guatemala, Jamaica, Colombia, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Honduras's territorial area, including all its islands, is 112,777 km².
The population of Honduras exceeds 10 million, most of whom are dedicated to agriculture, commerce, manufacturing, and public services, among other activities. The department of Honduras with the highest population density is Cortés, with 400.3 inhabitants/km².
The country is multiethnic. The mestizo population constitutes the majority. There are also populations of various indigenous peoples, such as the Lenca, Nahua, Miskito, Tolupan, Chortà Maya, Pech, Tawahka, GarÃfuna, English-speaking Black peoples, and the Spanish- and Miskito-speaking Zambos.
