Jersey is a British Crown Dependency located in the English Channel, specifically west of the coast of Normandy, France. The territory comprises the island of Jersey (which constitutes the majority) and a number of uninhabited archipelagos, such as Les Minquiers, Les Écréhous, and Les Pierres de Lecq, among others. Jersey is part of the Channel Islands archipelago, which also includes the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
Although the island is not part of the United Kingdom, the European Union, or the European Economic Area, its international representation, defense, and governance are the responsibility of the UK Government.
Thus, until the UK's withdrawal from the EU, it belonged to the European Union Customs Union, in accordance with Protocol 3 of the UK Accession Act (1972), and therefore benefited from the free movement of industrial and agricultural goods. As a member of the Common Travel Area (CTA), it also enjoyed the free movement of citizens of the European Economic Area.
It has a population of 292,449 in 2020, and its capital is Saint Helier.
In 933, the island was annexed to the Duchy of Normandy. When the Normans invaded England in 1066, Normandy and England were united under the same monarchy. During the Middle Ages, England lost many of its feudal possessions on the European continent but retained its islands in the English Channel, including Jersey.
Like Guernsey and the other Channel Islands, Jersey's economy is based on financial services, tourism, and agriculture. The native population's first language is French, more precisely a subdialect of Norman French; thus, the native population often calls their island Jèrriais (pronounced approximately: yerié). However, it is now spoken very little, as English is the most widely used language today.

Philately has been considered as an "auxiliary science of history" because it is based on the general principles of other sciences, which in turn contribute to enrich it.
