Gambia, officially the Republic of Gambia, is a country in West Africa. It is completely surrounded by Senegal, except where the Gambia River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
Gambia is the smallest country in continental Africa. It gained independence from the British Empire in 1965.
Its capital is Banjul, but the largest urban centers are Serekunda and Brikama.
Gambia, like many other West African nations, has its historical roots in the slave trade.
This was, in fact, what drove first the Portuguese, and then the British, to establish a colony on the Gambia River. Since independence in 1965, Gambia has enjoyed relative political stability, with the exception of a period of military rule following the 1994 coup d'état under President Yahya Jammeh.
Thanks to its fertile land, the country's economy is based on agriculture, but fishing and tourism are also important. About a third of the population lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 a day.
