West Germany was the colloquial term used between 1949 and 1990 to refer to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland or BRD), also known as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), when it occupied only the western portion of the German nation, to distinguish it from East Germany, properly the German Democratic Republic or GDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, or DDR).
Until 1990, the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany extended across central and western Europe, bordering Denmark to the north, the German Democratic Republic and Czechoslovakia to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France to the west.
Only to the north was it landlocked: the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The capital was Bonn, on the Rhine River, replaced by Berlin in 1990.
It was founded in 1949 with the beginning of the Cold War; its border with East Germany was a segment of the Iron Curtain that divided Western Europe, under NATO hegemony, from Eastern Europe, under the Warsaw Pact.
In 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany unified the German nation by formally annexing the East German state, forming the current state of Germany, with which it enjoys legal continuity and shares the same name.
