2009 Island Games arranged in Àland

The largest International sporting event in Àland ever sets off on 27 June this summer, when Àland hosts the NatWest Island Games XIII, also called just Island Games.

Àland last hosted thè Island Games in 1991 when the Àland Post issued a miniature sheet showing a view of the sports grounds in Mariehamn and featuring four different types of sport. Even this time, we focus on the event by the issue of a stamp.

The International Island Games were born in the Isle of Man in 1985. The number of participating islands has increased steadily, a total of 25 islands now being members of the International IG Committee. With an expected 3220 participants competing in 15 different sports, this sporting event is likely to be the largest Island Games ever.

Approx. 1500 officiais intend to ensure the success of the event.

This year's self-adhesive My Stamps booklet focuses on the Island Games, showing a sprinter setting off from an Àland granite rock. The background colours are the same as those of thè Àland flag.
