Belgian Photographers

In these postage stamps De Post-La Poste looks through the lens of five Belgian photographers:

Tim Dirven studied photography at Saint-Lucas Institute in Brussels. He started out working in black and white before switching to colour.

His pictures are infused with particular sensitivity and involvement. Dirven has won a string of prestigious awards.

Paul Ausloos studied painting at the Academy and the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp.

He was pari of G-58, a group of artists that made a splash with exhibitions at Hessenhuis in Antwerp between 1958 and 1962. At the end of the 1960s he moved his focus to photography. He manipulates light, waiting for just the right moment before opening thè shutter.

Léonard Misonne graduated as a mining engineer but found his vocation in photography.

Misonne perfected the mediobroom technique and was a big name among pictorialists in the 1940. The work of this painter-photographer is thè living memory of a lost world.

Harry Gruyaert received his education at "Ecole du Cinema et de Photographie" in Brussels and initially worked for Belgian TV.

In the early 1970s he started to travel, shooting thè world in exuberant colours, which became his trademark.

Stephan Vanfleteren studied photography at Saint-Lucas Institute in Brussels. He is a photographer at Belgian daily De Morgen and has been published in magazines at home and abroad.

Vanfleteren's black and white shots depict both major global conflicts and life closer to home. Nostalgia is a very strong theme in his numerous photo books.
